• We are often asked about "Handshake Domains" and their use. Handshake Domain Names are next generation domains that are
purchased through auctions using a unique currency known as "Handshake Cryptocurrency." Namecheap (domain registrar) is the
main provider of these domain names. These are experimental domain names (for now) and they require special setup and network
configuration.
• Handshake domain names are not under the ICANN umbrella, but an independent naming system based on the blockchain technology.
They are not part of the centralized Domain Name System (DNS) overseen by ICANN.
• You could have major issues using Handshake Domains with standard browsers, and even SSL certificate and emails; if they are
not configured properly, and even then, their proper functioning across all these areas is not ensured.
• If you are not sure if your domain is a Handshake domain, go to ICAAN Lookup page, enter your domain name, and if your domain
info/properties doesn’t come up (no registry RDAP server identified for this domain), most likely it is a Handshake domain name.
Summary: We would recommend NOT using Handshake domains at the time of writing this article (November 2025).
